Awake Career Opportunities

Part-Time Barista Growing Into Full-Time Bar Back

About Awake

Awake is an inclusive alcohol-free bar, spirit store, and coffee shop here to create space for peace, joy, and justice-making in our Denver community. Our shop is defined by high quality, locally sourced products and a kind, welcoming atmosphere. We’re located right on Jefferson Park, a few blocks north of Broncos Stadium.

We opened on November 20, 2020, serving our coffee menu and selling alcohol-free beer, wine, and spirits out of our window. This spring, we plan to open the inside of our space and add our evening bar program Thursday to Sunday.

We believe strongly in racial and gender equality and other forms of social justice. We meet that ambition in part by sharing two percent of sales and twenty percent of profits with local charities and offering discounts to lower income neighbors, veterans, and active service members. We actively seek partnerships with BIPOC- and women-led organizations.

We are seeking applicants who share these values and our commitment to an alcohol-free lifestyle. If you have a kind heart, believe in the beauty of conscious community, and possess a passion for serving others, please apply.

Summary of Barista-Bar Back Position

Because Awake is in a moment of transition as we move toward opening our evening bar program, we are seeking a Bar Back-Barista who is excited to grow with us into this new phase. The position will begin as soon as possible with a 10 hour/week schedule to learn our coffee and alcohol-free product sales programs and support our expanding customer base. As we move toward opening our bar program (likely in April), the position will shift into a full-time, 35-40 hours/week schedule, primarily focused on afternoons and evenings from Thursday to Sunday.

The ideal candidate will be alcohol-free, prioritize kindness and patience in interpersonal relationships, possess an industrious work ethic, apply creativity to challenges and opportunities, and demonstrate dedication to our socially conscious mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act with kindness, integrity, and dedication to customers, teammates, and the broader community to promote our values and advance our mission.
  • Deliver superior, second-to-none customer service by placing others’ needs and preferences first and striving to establish a positive rapport with everyone we encounter to generate an inclusive, community-oriented environment.
  • Maintain a peaceful mindset during high volume or otherwise challenging circumstances to set a tone for our team and customers.
  • Prepare and serve quality beverages and food products consistently for all customers by adhering to all recipe and presentation standards. Follow health, safety and sanitation guidelines for all products.
  • Support our head bartender/mixologist by serving alcohol-free beverages during our bar program hours, including pouring beer and wine, mixing drinks, preparing herbs and other ingredients for mixing, etc.
  • Lead light preparation of food menu products that will involve mixing basic ingredients, adding spices, and using our panini press to heat some items.
  • Bus tables for customers during coffee and evening bar programs, operate our rapid dishwasher, etc.
  • When time and workflow allows, bring food and drink products to customers at their table and periodically circulate to offer to take new orders.
  • Demonstrate superior knowledge of coffee and alcohol-free products to advise customers regarding their purchases when requested.
  • Executing opening and closing shifts individually, including setting up coffee service and thoroughly cleaning the space at the end of the day.
  • Operate a point of sales system while accurately handling cash and credit card payments.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, organized and secure environment for employees and customers.
  • Proactively solicit and integrate, when appropriate, customer feedback.
  • Be punctual and professional.
  • Follow all local, state and federal rules regarding COVID-19.
  • Communicate consistently and effectively with the Manager and owners regarding all aspects of the business.

Qualifications

  • Two or more years of bar, coffee shop, or café/restaurant experience.
  • Alcohol-free.

Compensation

  • $13/hour + tips
  • Health insurance
  • 401k with 3% match after 6 months
  • Paid time off
  • Flexible shifts
  • Membership in the gym in our building
  • Reserved space in parking garage in our building

How to Apply

Please send a cover email, resume and three professional references to info@awakedenver.com. In your letter, please attest that you are alcohol free and describe three unique strengths you possess that will help you meet and exceed the expectations identified for this position.
